AFAIK, the stylized red "A" symbol on the Nu's left front shoulder block stands as an identification for Amuro (and his trademark, of course), and the red "A" symbol on the front of the shield is "merged" with a unicorn, which IIRC stands as a homage to the White Base (Pegasus class...geddit?).
