It could have gotten votes, but I can't read Kanji, so if the title
doesn't have some Katakana, or Hiragana in it, I can't figure it out.
Sorry.
But I also wonder if maybe "Grave of the Fireflies" might hit too
close to reality for Japanese sensabilities. They maybe prefer to
address the deep issues of WWII through fantasies, like Gundam.

I've been trying to decipher the individual lists of creators, but
their names are all in Kanji except one---Hajime Katoki.

Hajime Katoki's top 5 list
1. Evangelion
2. Galaxy Express 999
3. Gundam
4. Lupin 3- Castle of Cagliostro
5. ? Anne with Red Hair (not sure if I'm reading this one right, but
if it is, then it is an old series based on "Ann of Green Gables" w/
chara designs by Miyazaki.)

I've also found other Gundam creator's lists--

Haruhiko Mikimoto's top 5
1. Ashita no Joe-2
2. Gundam the Movie II
3. Aim for the Top! Gunbuster
4. (?) can't tell, gomen ^_^!
5. (?)

Hiroyuki Kitazume's top 5
1. Mobile Suit Gundam
2. Lupin 3- Castle of Cagliostro
3. AKIRA
4. Future Boy Conan
5. Yamato

Now if I can only figure out which one is Tomino...
