Possibly never. There's a now-infamous illustration of a "snapshot" of Char and
Hamaan relaxing together in civilian clothes, in the fashion of a photo taken of
a couple on holiday. I don't remember where it first appeared -- I think it may
have been one of the Z Gundam Newtype 100% Collections -- but it's been taken as
evidence that Char and Hamaan were an item during their exile together on Axis.
There is absolutely no canonical evidence to support this. Just that one
illustration.
Another fannish rumor linked Char and Hamaan as classmates at the Academy --
Char as Hamaan's upperclassman mentor or sempei -- but the age difference is too
great, especially with Cassoval Lem Daikun (or, more correctly, Edward Maas)
adding two years to his actual age when he adopted the Char identity.
