It had to happen.
It's been through, what, 4 complete runs?
The last thing they want to do is burn people out on it. By taking it off
the air they're building up anticipation, especially with First Gundam
coming out in a few months (Early 2001, wasn't it?). With no Gundam on TV
for a couple of months, odds are kids are going to be a lot more receptive
to First when it airs, since it won't be as easily directly compared to the
more modern look of Wing. Hopefully they'll judge it on its story and
characters.
Wing _will_ be back, this is just a marketting ploy, and a smart one at
that.
