My guess would be that it's just that way to help break up the color a
little. Just imagine any gundam with a white chin. Now back to red. Much
better, isn't it? Helps break up the face a little. A cool color like blue,
white, purple, etc... wouldn't be able to do that nearly as well as a warmer
color would, in this case, red.
Like someone stated in an earlier post (I think), Tomino initially wanted
the RX-79 all white, like a storm trooper, but a (his?) marketing consultant
said it'd help sales to color them in 'child friendly' primary colors.
Why are the chins, hatches, soles of the feet, and waist crests (usually)
red? Probably just the touch of color the otherwise drab Gundam needed, I
suppose.
