> The mix of ideal heroism in a field of inherent corruption and
constraints make Gundam different from other hero stories (not implying that
it may not be a hero story at all) Anyway, aside from Arislan, can you guys
name other Anime with these kinds of themes?

Well many series deal with the dirty-cops can't stop the problem,
because they are a part of it, the one good cop/vigilante with the
heart of gold takes them on. Lets leave that theme out...
Amuro and Whitebase are not only the heroes, but they are told
they can't dump their civillians, and that they must act independently
with very little support from the Federation in the meantime. So we
have all the angst of being nearly abandoned by their government.
The problems that arise from people onbaord that didn't want to
be there, and a spaceship that's as leaky and untested as its crew.
Then we have some officers in high command that work for the
Zeons as double agents, but it isn't until 0083 that we see really
corrupt officials. The General in 08th MS team in the final series
episodes was distastefully ruthless, but not lying, cheating and in
some sort of conspiracy with the enemy of playing for power in
high command.
Please Nobody mention the guy in Revil's command staff that
was working for Ma Kube during the Odessa operation, my
players haven't gotten that far yet, and so far all their orders
wether normal missions or death traps have come from only
a few officers at command... Since my Gundam game is in the
Euro-theater I'm taking the opportunity to play up the corrupt
officers in high command.
Any one of these themes would be enough for one well done
series, but 0079 has overtones of all three in it. That's why I
think many of us enjoy Gundam, it has so many levels, you
peel away a layer and it still has more. I used to think 0083
was the weakest plotted Gundam series before I joined this
mailaing list, and Mark Simmons contributed to a thread on
"What did *anybody* get out of Operation Stardust" Titans
leaders had ways to profit from the Colony drop, but Delaz
really didn't win any support for the Zeons, and actually got
his people (spacenoids) brutallized by thugs for the next 4
years... Cima betrayed her people, got Feds and Zeons KIA
and for what? Most of the answers are Fan speculation, and
probably NEVER imagined by the studio guys when they did
the series, but the answers to those questions are great fun if
you like UC.
My two yen...
