Hmmm...I'm not too sure of this. While it's true it's very rare to see a
Gundam outside in the field with regular units and not performing some
specialized task, I am pretty sure that given how well-rounded it is, it can
fulfill any role assigned to it. Standardized is something it is not, though.

Well, I would think that only applies to the normal GMs and not variants
like the GM Sniper, Aqau GM and so on...in any case, they'd be able to do
most of the same stuff, but just not as well.

Simple. Let's say you have a machine that can swim, fly and go over
mountains. However, it does so at the rate of 1 mile per day. How useful is
that? ^_^
This is an extreme example, but it works.

As I said, they were discovered to have been useful for work later. In any
case, it doesn't really matter, since Gundams are prohibitively expensive
and mass-producing GMs seems to work better.
