Well, they can follow in the Gundam's footsteps, but they're going to be a
lot less effective at doing so.

Not really. Remember the Proto Gundam? (Never seen in the series, as far as
I know) THAT was the test model Gundam - the actual Gundam was supposed to
be a multi-purpose mobile suit, but because of the high cost involved in
constructing one, the GMs were developed instead.
