While I haven't seen 08th, and thus am not entirely familiar with how things go,
any time you're talking about customizing mobile suits (a time honored tradition
in the genre...), I think a better comparison would be to the battlefield
upgrades that I understand were fairly popular among the American forces during
World War II, particularly with the outgunned and out armored M4 Sherman tanks.
Admittedly, these upgrades consisted of pretty much nothing more than putting
some extra armor on the front of the tank, and maybe putting a 76 mm cannon in
the turret before the "official" authorization. But the point is that crew will
generally try to weasel any possible upgrades past their top brass as long as
those upgrades will ensure that said crew is able to come home in one piece. If
the local commander lets them do so, and the upgrades don't cause an unnecessary
drain on logistical support, then who knows exactly what you'll encounter in the
field?
