i know just one thing -- brain powerd mech designs
suck. (imo, anyway). then again, i also hate
evangelion mech designs.

*cough*
*aherm!*
count me in as one (one of many, i must say)
evangelion resistance fighter. i dislike eva, and by
the gods (that may exist or not), nothing short of the
threat of excruciatingly painful torture can make me
watch that show EVERagain. however, i still think
that eva should be watched by anime fans, if only so
that they can make their own minds up and see what the
fuss is all about.
one reason why eva is a fishbone in my throat (eck!)
is that it is, as richie said, a public catharsis. an
extremely pitiful and pathetic one, at that. you do
NOT tell a story to exorcise your own inner demons.
blazing bajeezus, that's what diaries are for. eva is
nothing more than a thinly veiled overhyped diary. i
knew nothing of the circumstances of eva's creator
when i watched eva. after i finished it, i came to
several conclusions: that the creator must have
probably been recently jilted; is angry at the
world/religion/god; and has some psychological
problems. later probing and fan research confirms at
least 2 out of 3. i don't know how true those facts
are, but my dislike of eva does not stem purely from
that (thankfully).
i dislike eva for the exact reasons that richie stated
(more articulately than i could ever have in my
anti-eva rants :P). the whole religious/philosophical
schtick in eva is just so haphazardly slapped together
that it becomes a shebang to impress and confuse the
viewers with, and not gracefully interjected into the
story (like escaflowne -- a series i consider as
"evangelion done right, dammit" :P).
the symbolisms that eva tosses in (adam, eve, 18
angels, 3 magi, longinuss spear, scrolls, kaworu
nagisa parables, yaddayaddayadda, penguins,
beer-for-breakfast, yaddayaddayadda...) are so
fricking disjointed. i am fairly aware of the
psychobabble and the host of great thinkers that
sprouted the psychcobabble and concepts that eva
introduces. but even with my meager knowledge, i
gotta say that eva does not know what it is yammering
about -- the show just plucked this and that from many
many lines and ages of reasoning and mashed them
together -- something i'm pretty sure my philosophy
teachers and profs would shake their heads in dismay
at (all the philosophical and theological mambo jambo
in the show...sadly mishandled and taken out of
context).
the only thing the religious and philosophical
schticks in evangelion have in common is that they all
focus on shinji's dilemma -- the hedgehog ballyhoo,
isolation of mankind, depression and hope issues. and
when you look past all the psychobabble, it all boils
down to a (really bad) self-pity story -- the tale of
shinji the hedgehog (in no way related to sonic) who
couldn't do a thing to save himself or anyone.
the entire cast of evangelion produced not a single
likeable character. except a penguin...which
possessed far more courage, ability and charisma than
the unadulterated wimp of a main character. and
that's a BAD thing in my book. the characters are
all dysfunctional bastards (some, quite literally).
while i am perfectly aware of the dark sides that each
of us -- as real people -- hides from society, i
absolutely HATE the way evangelion handled the issue.
almost everyone is running away and scurrying back
under a slimy rock from their problems, and that is so
fah-reaking bogus in my opinion. particularly because
some people i know in real life have faced more
daunting problems and don't crumble and wail about as
evangelion characters do.
at any rate, i have nothing against people liking
evangelion and i respect their tastes. i'm always
willing to read why people like it (feel free to send
me 12 page essays in private email :).
disclaimer: sorry to ramble on about evangelion. but
if i were to do this on an evangelion list, that would
be defeating the point (that i dislike eva, hence,
what the heck would i be doing on an eva mailing
list?) :P

my take is you gotta poll more people to get a more
diverse feedback. ;)
you know my stance on eva. the reason i think why
many people toot eva's horn is because it's the first
rock-the-boat anime they watched (thus, the ever
annoying "eva saved anime" camp...*groan*). ask the
opinions of older fans, and you might get different
answers. i, for one, am not impressed by evangelion
at all.
as for esca...well i like it. but...erhm. i know one
who dislikes or is at least indifferent to escaflowne.
can't fault him though. the amano-hitomi
schoolboy-schoolgirl thing gets corny sometimes, as
does the hitomi-allen-millerna stuff (not to mention
the schoolgirl costume, which DOES make one go "what
the F...?"). can anyone spell "cheese"? but i can
forgive that in light of the larger than life story.
ranma......i personally couldn't care less about
ranma. i have nothing against it. i just don't care
for the dinky comedy genre of anime.
