The RGM-79[E] was what the GM was suposed to be before further cost cutting
and was latter realized as the RGM-79C.

The RX-79[G] and RGM-79[G] were IMHO brought about by the need to have land
MS ASAP without waiting for the results of Project V in Side 7 (the actuall
prototypes). They were cut out only because of cost cutting. The Gundam
Ground type was a highly specialized multi-role MS with many features that
should have made it, the GM[G] represents further cost cutting.

It seems more of a case of sloppy organization as team MS assignments seem
to be based more on what they can give the team. Your agrument makes sense
though, actually it is like in most modern airforces where most wings are
made up of the same kind of aircraft. You don't see an F-22 leading a pack
of F-15s. Besides, since the commander is familiar with the pros and cons
of his MS, having his teamates in the same MS allows him to be able to
command them better. This is probably why Kojima arranged his batalion this
way. Also, the Federation has a habit of not spoiling its pilots, unlike
the Zion who seem to enjoy giving their aces and commanders specialized MS.
