I was reading rec.arts.anime.models the other day (truly a pleasant
newsgroup to read) and there was an interesting thread on continuity busting
caused by the 08th MS Team. Among the obvious questions of how you can
resolve the RGM-79[G], RGM-79[E], and RX-79[G] into the existing timeline
were questions as to why some of the teams consisted entirely of GM's while
others entirely of Gundams. The majority of people thought it would make
more sense to have the Gundam Grountype as a squad leader's MS, so each team
would have a Gundam and a pair of GM's.
Given that, I gave a little thought to why this could be. My guess goes
something like this:
Say a squad of 3 GM Groundtypes has some arbitrary strength value, which for
mathematical simplicity we'll say is 100. Now, lets also say that a Gundam
is another arbitrary value "better" than a GM. Let's say a Gundam groundtype
is 10% better than its GM equivilent. Given that, a squad of 1 Gundam and 2
GM's would have 110% effectiveness compared to a 3 GM'd squad.
Compare that to a squad consisting of 3 Gundams, the effectiveness of which
would be 130% (or 133% depending on whether you consider the effect to be
cumulative).
Now, we can resolve this by questioning whether it would make more sense to
have 8 teams with slightly improved effectiveness (110%), or some teams with
normal (100%) effectiveness and several with highly improved effectiveness
(130%). As such, missions where it is expected that GM's would be
sufficient, one of the GM only squads can be assigned, while tougher
missions can be given to the Gundam equipped groups. Say, for example,
Feddie strategists assume that it would take a 120% effective squad to
complete a mission, this could not be completed by a Gundam+2 GM squad, but
could easily be handled by the 3 Gundam squad.
Remember, these are purely arbitrary figures to express a point, and I'm not
saying a Gundam is 10% more effective than a GM, but I am assuming that it
is some statistically noticable amount better.

Any comments? Does this solution make sense?
