What about the natural Newtypes, like Quess? Quess never seems to be in any real danger, yet by the time she went to space with Hathaway, she's a Newtype already (she did warn the captain of the shuttle of incoming rocks). I don't really see her in any real danger...
With Char a Newtype, on his own? Or did he become a Newtype through his
connection with Amuro and Lala Sun? Lala became a Newtype through the tragedy
of her parents death, but Char was too young to become a Newtype from his own
father's death, as Char was never in directly in danger. He was extremely
driven as a teen, and accomplish much in combat, but was even truly in a
situation that could bring out a Newtype?
I think Char is those "latent" Newtype - where his NT ability come very late in his life, only after exposure to other NT. Even Bright's NT ability came very late, and his NT "power" is quite weak, if there at all.
