Again, this is my mistake. Sorry about that.

True, but this will be more of a economic problem rather than a
technical problem, I guess.

Actually, we don't know how much maintanence an I-field generator
requires. Granted, in 0083 the technology is new, so probably the
maintainence is too high. Later on, in 0123 (40 years on!), the major
problems should have been overcome, but we still don't see deployment of
these fields.

Economic reasons are probably the main reason. Furthermore, after
0091, there's been quite a long period of peace in the System, so I presume the
urge to develop new weapons and defenses simply went away with Char and Amuro.

That's why I proposed multiple shields instead of one big shield.
The shields covering the guns can be dropped momentarily to allow the guns
to fire through. The Big Zam either had power problems -- can't run both
I-fields AND the guns at the same time -- or I-fields work both ways, which
is more likely.

As for whether I-fields coming into contact with each other will
fuse or bounce off -- well, I'll wait for expert (nudge nudge Mark or -Z- or
any other expert...) advice. But I think studying the behaviour of the beam
saber I-fields should give us some clues, even though the beam saber fields
are of lesser density.

My point being? Well, it's that any MS with a beam weapon is
carrying a capital-ship class weapon -- or at least a Musai class weapon.

As for whether an I-field defense bubble can absolutely protect
against all mega-particle weapons...

As one of my engineering friends put it: There is no such thing as
unmovable object. You can always apply more force to break through a barrier.

An I-field makes an MS very close to invincible, I agree, especially
in the OYW period when beam weaponry is not well-developed yet. Later, we
see the introduction of a new beam weapon, the VSBR, which was design
specifically to penetrate the I-field/plasma defense of a beam barrier --
and it worked.

An defensive I-field, by nature, has a limit, because when you
crunch the particles within the I-field too close, they will fuse and become
mega-particles (as I understand from Mark's site). So there's a finite limit
on how "powerful" a I-field is.

*Therotically*, and I stress that word, since we don't have any
evidence that it is possible, a beam weapon should be able to punch through
the I-field if it has enough power and a thin enough focus -- the bywords of
the VSBR, incidentally. But practically, the power consumption such a weapon
may need should be so high that it's impossible to hit an MS with an I-field.

Well, I was thinking just post 0123, where the technology is about
matured. I think it may be feasible as early as 0085-0090, because the
technology would have been around for 10+ years.
