I am not exactly sure about the name of the device, but it is a microchip that
functions as part of the Psycho-Frame system. If I am not mistaken, it was a
rather risky surgery because of its novelty. Amuro had a discussion with a
technician (presumably from Anaheim Electronics, to whom Char leaked the
PsychoFrame technology) in the presence of Chien in the anime. Judging from the
dialogue, Amuro was so into defeating Char that he would undergo any surgery just
to be able to communicate better with his unit. Henceforth a solid piece of
evidence to the limited level of brainwave emission Amuro had before 0093.
