Personally I think a small pair of wire nippers are my favorite tool. (They
are like Dykes but the top is rounded to a dull point and there is no flag
surface like pliers, only a cutting edge.)

I use that to cut the pieces off the sprue. I can get close enough to the
model so that a huge piece of plastic isn't hanging off. They I carefully
shave any long excess off, then finish it with a piece of 600-800 sandpaper.

Works great.
