Actually, this was touched on VERY lightly in the novels. Minovsky particles
make long range smart weapons next to useless, and combat is more visually
ranged. Even so, it is very hard to see an ms at full thrust. Since an IFF
would give away a suits exact location to everyone shooting at it, the don't
use one, thus painting your guys a color different from your enemy keeps
friendly fire accidents to a minimum.

In other words, handwaving for the paintjobs.
