While the R-1 and R-2 appear very similar, the guts under the armor is
completely different. While the R1 and R1A were basically souped up
Zaku IIs, the R-2 had what would eventually become the Gelgoog underneath
its armor. Basically the R-2 served as a testbed of sorts for Zeon's new
generation of high performance space suits, which turned out to be the
Gelgoog. So although these R-type Zaku IIs looked the same, they were
very different in terms of performance between the R1 and R2 series. As for
the R-1A, it is an enhanced/modified version of the R-1.
