It does make some sense, the Salamis does look 'heavier' and better
armored than the light cruiser Musai.

  Ah, the classic broadside.

All the Fed ships seemed to be loaded with AA weapons, probably relics
from the pre-Minofsky era. This ought to give them some innate anti-MS
ability though it never seems to help in practice.

The Salamis has 5 times more missiles than the Musai? That's a surprise!
It really IS a good ship then! Yes, and Fed designs seem to always be more
compact and better protected than the Zeon spacecraft... Unfortunately,
the bridges always seemed rigged with explosives. (Growl).
