The thing is, Burning gets injured after Kou has already piloted GP-01
for a while.
The first time I saw the series, I watched it in straight Japanese with
no translation.
Maybe it was just me, but it seems to me that Kou took the GP-01 without
authorization, in essence, he stole it. I think it was combination of him
already
having experience in the suit, and the platoon's second in command
getting killed,
that convinced Burning to leave Kou as the GP-01's pilot.
