They are kanjis, or Chinese characters. You don't need to learn them if
you only watched Gundam, since Gundam is loaded of Katakana, not kanji...

If you ever need to input Japanese (for searching purposes, or what have
you), you might also want to download the NJ Communicator, from the makers
of NJWIN, that lets you input Japanese, Chinese and Korean on your regular
English version of Windows. I haven't try to use it to input Japanese yet,
since I don't need to (I am already using the Japanese Windows, as you can
see from my e-mail messages...)
