It's not _water_ that makes rust, it's _Oxygen_!

Probably the only thing that could cause colony and spacecraft materials
to 'rust' so thoroughly in space is simply the presence of oxygen (from
the atmosphere) and extreeme heat (from the explosion) together... this
can instantly rust metals.
