That depends on what you call "service". Heinlein held a commission and
wore the uniform and performed a duty. He met his future wife Virginia in
1942, as both worked as "computers" building gunnery tables for use by Navy
battleships.

Just because he never served aboard ship, doesn't mean he didn't serve.

You may be confusing Roert A. Heinlein with L. Ron Hubbard....
